On June 7, North Coast Land Conservancy received a donation of 36 acres of forestland just east of Neskowin, in southern Tillamook County. The property includes land on both banks of Butte Creek, a salmon-bearing tributary of Neskowin Creek.
Conservation of this land was the vision of landowner and Neskowin resident Sue Gabriel, who in 2011 purchased a parcel of forested land on Butte Creek with the goal of protecting a beloved ancient Sitka spruce she calls Heshe (HE-she). Sue then began looking for an organization to which she could donate this parcel and a smaller parcel nearby, also along Butte Creek, for protection in perpetuity. In addition to the donation of land, Sue provided financial support that will allow NCLC to manage the properties in perpetuity for the conservation values they possess. Sue represents the type of enthusiastic landowner NCLC treasures working with to protect important habitats along the Oregon Coast.
“I send my joyous thanks for accepting the donation of my land on Butte Creek,” Sue wrote to the NCLC board and staff after the property closed. “Knowing that it and all who make it their home will be protected forever is just the best feeling ever!”
