This area is a historic high marsh system of the Necanicum River estuary. During the 1960s a large fill operation cut the system off from the estuary tidal hydrology. It currently functions as a freshwater wetland, with the exception of a small tidal channel connected to Mantel Lake.
The current wetland ecology has been in place at least since the 1980s.
