  • Listening to What Nature has to Say

A visit to the Gearhart Fen is “just like walking into a museum,” ecologist and botanist Kathleen Sayce says. She would know. Kathleen has spent many hours documenting the plant life in the fen, much of which is conserved as

As of Thursday, Astoria Co+op's Change for Community program had raised $2,400 for the proposed Rainforest Reserve!

Our project is the recipient for January, so there is still time left to shop at the co-op and round up your change to help us conserve 3,500 acres of temperate rainforest on the North Oregon Coast.

Thank you to everyone who has donated so far, and to our friends at the Astoria Co+op. 💚💚💚

This is such a wonderful bonus to 5 years of work to make the Rainforest Reserve a reality. Thanks to the Astoria Co+op!

Sally Lackaff here, wrapping up my social media takeover for NCLC!

Though a native Cannon Beacher, I probably have never been up on Onion Peak myself, but murky childhood memories place me on mountainous cliffs with the ocean in view; in those far ago days logging roads were apparently more accessible.

My painter father loved throwing us in the back of the pickup and exploring up the local creeks as far as safety would allow… and probably beyond those bounds.

My most personal experience of anything close to Onion Peak, as a cognitive adult, must be the opportunity of a recent tour of the Rainforest Reserve, both limited and enhanced by that year’s first and heaviest snowfall; with an NCLC team of notables we drove up the bumpy roads and picnicked overlooking the black-and-white landscape down to the mercury ocean.

The white blanket was stitched with paw, claw, and hoof prints; ravens lorded over the skies, and the utterly sublime stillness and unlikely wonder of an ocean view coated with snow was a treat like no other.

Thank you, Sally Lackaff! Is this amazing artwork for sale? Or is it possible to buy prints?

Thank you Sally. You've done a great job both with your artwork and your commentary. We really appreciate your unique perspective on the NCLC vision. Come back.

It's Sally Lackaff for Day 2 of taking over NCLC's It's Sally Lackaff for Day 2 of taking over NCLC's social media! #coastalconservationcollabs

My pleasure in painting the inset Olympic onion with its glorious peak (hued in my very favourite pre-gloaming light) was thoroughly memorialized by a concurrent, quite-by-chance meeting at my unrelated day job with Kim Stafford, whose specially written poem my art would soon be bolstering.

What an honour to present my awkward greetings to his stature, and what a nice man!

Sally Lackaff here again! The murky green light o Sally Lackaff here again!

The murky green light of under-storied Pacific forests creates a hallowed atmosphere, a dream-like soft reality with omnipresent liquidity of sound.

The surrounds of leaf and branch cushion one’s presence, and the enveloping pleasure is only enhanced by the satisfaction one experiences at close-up encounters with such miraculous creatures as the Cope’s salamander. Some day, I really do hope to meet one myself!

I can never spend any time drawing a bobcat (alway I can never spend any time drawing a bobcat (always a distinct pleasure, of course!) without some niggle of memory forcing me to relive the very special pain of my teenage years, when every day my begrudging steps would take me past a trophy case stuffed with mouldering taxidermied specimens of these poor animals, sacrificed on the altar of being our school mascot. (I was also the editor for a year of the Bay Lynx, our school paper, though I always wondered at the archaic name.)

Anyway, Go Union Bobcats…! And may your living, breathing relatives always roam safely through the Rainforest Reserve.
