Conservation Photojournalism Internship


POSITION: Photojournalism Intern (1 position to fill)

REPORTS TO: Communications Coordinator


POSITION TYPE: Internship, 40 hours/week

COMPENSATION: $1,000/month stipend + shared housing

TERM: June 26 to September 24, 2017; potential to extend additional 3 months to mid-December

CLOSES: May 14, 2017



Photojournalism intern will work under supervision of North Coast Land Conservancy’s communications coordinator to make substantial progress toward completion of a searchable archive of photographs by Gearhart nature photographer Neal Maine. Intern will also photograph and get videotape clips of representative On the Land outings, the summer picnic, two summer stewardship events, and three-day CoastWalk Oregon for use in future publicity efforts. Intern will also take the lead on social media posting for NCLC for the duration of the internship. Intern should be motivated and self-disciplined, as much of his/her time intern will be working autonomously and setting his/her schedule to meet the goals of the internship.



Work directly with Neal Maine to create a searchable archive and to begin archiving Neal’s body of work, using hardware and software provided by NCLC. Work will be done at Neal’s home in Gearhart and at the NCLC office in Seaside, as required. Starting and making substantial progress on the archive is the primary responsibility. Completion of the archive within the three-month term of the internship is not expected. By the end of the internship, systems should be established for adding and tagging (for searchability) new photography and a substantial portion of photography should be archived.

Attend a representative sample of On the Land outings to gather a variety of still photos and video (landscape, people, nature close-up) for use in future NCLC publications.

Photograph other scheduled events such as Summer Picnic at the Barn, occasional Weed Warrior Wednesday events, and other events representative of NCLCs summer work, especially those involving volunteers.

Photograph three-day CoastWalk Oregon Sept. 22-24. Accommodations can be made for taking time off prior to Sept. 22 to make arrangements for returning to college if needed.

Regularly post to Instagram and Facebook according to guidelines provided by communications coordinator.

Provide communications coordinator with suggestions for enhancing NCLC’s social media presence going forward.

Occasionally work weekend days and/or evening, as events require; otherwise maintain a normal business-week work schedule.

Attend weekly staff meetings.

Maintain a positive and collaborative attitude throughout the season.

Other duties as assigned.



High School Diploma (working towards a degree in journalism/communications preferred)

Demonstrated skill in photojournalism, both still and video.

Demonstrated experience and skill in using social media (Facebook and Instagram). Experience using social media for nonprofits or business preferred.

Demonstrated interest in land conservation and environmental issues and nature photography preferred.

Must have own vehicle to drive to work locations as needed. Reimbursement will be provided at standard IRS rate.

Must provide own photography equipment (smartphone, preferably plus camera for macro and telephoto photography and video)
