Botanical Drawing Workshop

April 28, 2017

When: Monday, August 5, 1 to 3:30 pm
Where: Circle Creek Conservation Center, Seaside
Led by: Dorota Haber-Lehigh

Enjoy an afternoon of low-stress drawing in the outdoors with artist, naturalist, and educator Dorota Haber-Lehigh. Explore the fundamentals of botanical drawing while learning about non-native invasive plants of the Pacific Northwest region and specifically Circle Creek. Learn how to observe various botanical features and how to represent them in a sketch or a more complete study. We will begin with loose sketching first and then work on creating a study page of one or more invasive plants.

Bring your own favorite sketchbook, pencil, pencil sharpener, Pigma Micron 005 pen, magnifying lens and other art supplies of your choice, if you have them. Some supplies will be provided: paper, pencils, erasers, and colored pencils. Should the weather take a turn, participants can retreat to the big barn at Circle Creek to continue drawing. No drawing experience is necessary.

DOROTA HABER-LEHIGH loves gardening, hiking, field sketching, mushroom hunting, and botanical drawing. Her passion is drawing native plants and discovering their edibility, medicinal use, and ecological connection. She is drawn into the sculptural and architectural wonder of plants as well as their ephemeral beauty throughout all seasons. She authored two ethnobotanical coloring books, ABC of Native Plants of the Coastal Pacific Northwest and Native Berries of the Coastal Pacific Northwest. She enjoys teaching English as a second language and art of ethnobotany at Seaside High School and botanical drawing at various community centers.

Outing info: Be prepared to walk short distances on uneven land. No toilets on site. No dogs allowed on site.

What to bring: Water, snacks, and camping chair as well as basic drawing supplies mentioned above. If you don’t have a sketchbook, paper on a clipboard works; bring extra clips in case it’s windy.
