About the BioBlitz
North Coast Land Conservancy’s Cape Falcon Marine Reserve Program is hosting a monthlong BioBlitz from Aug. 15 to Sept. 15, 2023. The BioBlitz will take place in and around Cape Falcon Marine Reserve, located on the Oregon North Coast, just off of Oswald West State Park, near the town of Manzanita.
A bioblitz is a communal effort to identify and record as many distinct species in a designated area and timeframe in order to collect long-term datasets.
Want to participate? The first step is to download the iNaturalist app onto your mobile device and join our project in iNaturalist. Then, any time during the bioblitz, head down to Short Sand Beach, Falcon Cove Beach and Neahkahnie Beach to look for various species and document your observations in the app. Even if you don’t know exactly what something is, don’t worry. Researchers and other users from around the world work to identify all species recorded.
The participant who records the most species during the monthlong project will win a marine reserve gift basket. To learn more about the value of community science and how to use iNaturalist, watch a recording of our 2022 virtual training session. Although we hosted this training before last year’s event, the instructions and insights are still relevant for 2023!
Don’t forget to also share your observations on social media, tagging North Coast Land Conservancy (@nclctrust) and including #CFMRBioBlitz2023.
Hi, I downloaded the INaturalist app on my android to be ready for observations beginning Aug 15th.
Am I supposed to find the NCLC in the app to connect with?
If so, I could not locate it.
I am, however, in southern CA today, so maybe it only connects with nearby conservatories.
Please let me know how I connect with NCLC on the app. Thank you!
