A first glimpse of the ocean along Oregon's Pacific Coast Scenic Byway shows surprising connections.

Oregon's coastal region has a diverse landscape -- upland forests, salmon spawning streams, rocky coastal cliffs. People have valued the bountiful natural resources between the ridgetops and the ocean for more than 4,000 years.

At the north end of Seaside lies the Gateway to Discovery -- an entry point to Oregon's coastal riches -- birding, geology, and a salmon rich watershed. The Coastal Natural History Center sits on the Necanicum estuary, joining three rivers with deep cultural and historical significance.

This natural history center on 10 acres of green space serves the community and its visitors by extending beyond the walls of a building. Come walk in a spruce forest, learn about local birding, sit on the deck and watch for bald eagles while the tides come and go, learn about the region's natural, cultural, and historical resources.

Use the Gateway as a starting point for your exploration of the Seaside region and the coast.

Sharing stories of cultural interactions with coastal natural resources over time.
