Conservation Initiatives: Estuaries

Shorebirds take flight at the Necanicum Estuary

Heart of the Coast

Ecologically speaking, estuaries are the beating heart of all major coastal watersheds. Estuaries are where rivers and streams meet the sea and where fresh and saltwater mix. In order for any part of the watershed to work, the estuary must function. Estuaries are high conservation priorities for the land trust. We always prefer to see that the estuary has been conserved as much as possible before shifting our focus to the upper watershed.
